Dominique Wilkins Starting Lineup
The warm-up fits that Kenner created for their Starting Lineups figures are undoubtedly some of the coolest designs in the collection. They ooze the 90s. I picked up this Domonique Wilkins from Half-Price Books for this exact reason. Not only did the 90s aesthetic from the warm-ups make me want to buy this, but also the fact that he’s not wearing an Atlanta Hawks jersey! Many may have forgotten, but he did play for the Celtics in the 95-95 season. Surprisingly (or not if you are from Boston) he even averaged 19.8PP and a career-high 38% from 3. Let’s be real though, seeing him in a Celtics uniform just does not look right! When you think of Dominique Wilkins, you picture him in a Hawk’s Uni facing off against Celtics legends like Larry Bird. This uniqueness of his being in Boston is another reason why I decided to cough up $5 for this SLU.
Speaking of looking out of place, there are several notable "legends in the wrong uniform" scenarios that stand out to me. Some of my personal favorites include Patrick Ewing on the Magic, Hakeem Olajuwon on the Raptors, and Shawn Kemp on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yeah, let’s pretend these scenarios never happened.
Galoob’s All-Star MVPs: 1997 Houston Rockets Mini Figures
Last month I grabbed the ‘97 Bulls team (check out last month’s post) off of eBay, but I felt they were looking a bit lonely on my desk. To fill this void I decided to go with the ‘97 Houston Rockets, which in my opinion has one of the best rosters of the series. We’ve Got Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kevin Willis, Clyde Drexler, and Mario Ellie. Any set with Barkley included makes it 10x cooler. This squad is awesome, but the one thing that isn’t so awesome is the pose they decided to go with the Dream (front row on the left). I mean what are they trying to illustrate here? Is he flying, dunking, diving for a loose ball? Hey Galoob, how ‘bout a simple hook shot?!
